Mulherin + Pollard Projects is pleased to present two concurrent solo exhibitions for the month of December: STO, My Slow Called Life and Brian Novatny, picture fishing

Both exhibitions will run from December 1-31st. Please join us for a reception after we return from Miami on Thursday, December 8, from 6-9pm.

In My Slow Called Life, STO presents a tranquil, one room NY studio apartment scene as the backdrop for a variety of papier mache sculptures. Devoid of any people, we are left to ponder the objects on their own as we walk through the space. Leftover pizza on the table, old food in the fridge, a stack of books, some dirty socks, and a slop sink with paintbrushes as well as toothbrushes are just a few of the mundane objects recreated in chunky, lovable papier mache. There is a natural sense of whimsy in the limitations of the mache as a medium and it boldly reveals itself with rough textures and gobs of paint applied liberally. There is also a sense of comedy beneath the surface, as if the objects were laughing at their own meaninglessness and at us for needing them. These deadpan takes on quotidian objects question our common understanding of what is real and reveal the many ways that we are entangled with our possessions. By shining a spotlight on the everyday, these works evoke our own daily lives and slow us down long enough to take stock in what they really consist of.

Brian Novatny beautifully employs a sophisticated technique of light touch and seeming tentativeness to his engaging pictures. The vulnerable quality of the artists’ mark echoes the confused, preoccupied, or uncertain sense of the figures. In the same way that the people are disconnected from one another in their environs, they are frequently similarly disjointed themselves, as their bodies and heads may be alternately painted or drawn in contast to one another, or the scale of two people in the same space disproportionate. Yet, amid all this uncertainty, Novatny’s broken stories manage to engage and delight. Novatny’s drawings are colorful, intimate works that are disconcerting and oddly charming.

"In high school I saw a movie by Gus van Sant where Joaquin Phoenix and Nicole Kidman conspire to kill Matt Dillon’s character. It was set in a small North Eastern, North American town. It took place largely in winter. It must have resonated with me because I remember it vividly. I can see the overcast skies casting cool light over moss greens, rust reds and any number of shades of brown and grey. I remember back alleys, trees without leaves, dead grass, snow, dilapidated white-sided buildings and small, unused, wooden churches. It wasn’t really the plot of the movie that was interesting – I think Casey Affleck and Phoenix are arrested for murder and David Cronenberg makes a guest appearance as a hitman and promptly kill’s Kidman’s character – it was the setting that I was really attracted to. And what was interesting was that the movie was shot, in part, in the small town where I lived at the time. So, it wasn’t that I could just relate to the feel of the setting. I actually, literally, knew that place intimately. And maybe it transformed the way I thought about and how I looked at where I lived. It was still the place where we went about the banality of our daily routine – where we trudged through the snow to school, didn’t wake up on time, dressed badly, bickered, weren’t as good looking as movie stars, had poor posture, anxiety and shortcomings, and generally exemplified all the frailties that encompass the human condition - but it also became rich with possibility."

Heather Goodchild, Walking the Pattern

Heather Goodchild's practice involves exploring the rituals, regalia and symbols of world religions, Girl Guides and Freemasonry in an attempt to understand the purpose of these traditions. Using traditional textile techniques such as rug-hooking, inlaid patchwork and quilting, she has developed new ways to execute old crafts, creating pieces that seem to exist both in the past and present.
Recently Goodchild has used the scaffold of a fictitious ladies organization (The Wardens) begun in the late nineteenth century with roots in sixteenth century Germany to express her ideas. By creating this society, including its rituals, mythology, moral code and material paraphernalia, Goodchild is able to examine the necessity of such rites in a twenty-first century culture that often lacks the trappings of traditional religion.

New York born artist, Nina Bovasso presents her latest works on paper in a new series titled "What's Your Bubble?". Bovasso's acrylic and ink drawings feature densely constructed, intricately woven abstraction, rich in color and finely executed lines.

Now sprouting legs and feet appropriated from the human form, Disney and Breughel, these anthropomorphized, architectural shapes are transformed into a hybrid of humanness and mobile apparatuses. In this new work, Bovasso's quasi-cartoon, graphic style connects the handmade with the hand-held world of information overload. Through her vibrant images, Bovasso shows the power of the human hand and imagination, while playfully acknowledging the impact of the bit-stream world on our identities.

Bovasso's work can be found in the collections of: Collectie KPN, Netherlands; The New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York, NY; The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, NY; JP Morgan/ Chase Bank, New York, NY; MoMA, New York, NY; Deutsche Bank, NY/DE; among others. Her work has also been reviewed in Art Forum, The New York Times, Art in America, and TImeOut NY.

Richmond, Virginia-born artist Bruce Wilhelm has been showing his often absurd, always clever artworks with ADA Gallery in Richmond, Virginia since 2005. Asked to describe his latest series of paintings, "Airlock", Bruce says, "My recent work spans the distance from Shopenhauer's black box to Carl Sagan's Cosmos turned pizza box. Fueled by stoner thought experiments, I can make it to the megaliths of Mars." Wilhelm's awards and distinctions include student and professional grants from The Virginia Museum of FIne Art, Richmond, Va; the prestigious Theresa Pollack Scholarship Award, Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, Va.

We are excited and overwhelmed by our success during Armory week in New York!

For our inaugural year at Volta we exhibited the paintings, drawings and photographs of the legendary underground filmmaker George Kuchar.

The response at the fair was incredible--long time fans were excited to see photographs and paintings by their favorite filmmaker, and others were introduced to Kuchar for the first time.

During the art fair, and continuing to pop up on the internet are quite a few glowing reviews of Kuchar's work at the ADA Gallery booth in the press.

Paddy Johnson of Art Fag City awarded us the Golden Fag Award, saying "Who had the best all round booth at this year’s New York fairs? With so many fairs it’s not hard to name just one: ADA’s George Kuchar booth at VOLTA. ADA’s Kuchar easily clinches this year’s award for exposing art fair viewers to one of the most under appreciated, yet widely influential artists of his time."

Additionally, Art Info wrote two separate pieces highlighting George's work at Volta, naming our booth the "most notable" in the fair.

Jared Clark’s varied and idiosyncratic art practice encompasses sculpture, drawing, collage and video, playfully transgressing the boundaries between these modes of production. While the act of making is performed explicitly in Clark’s time-based work, there is a lingering suggestion of performance threaded throughout his oeuvre.

Clark’s ‘bilds’ are constructed from materials that are both familiar and odd - cutting boards, luggage, soap, craft paintings, ceramic figurines, map pins, painted rocks, Styrofoam, fruit, and glass - and appear to be simultaneously carefully constructed, balanced and casual. Whether fixed in place with adhesives, or stacked between trees, there is a sense that these structures are provisional, a pause in an ongoing, mutating, stream of creation. Clark approaches history as a material, and much like the objects he picks up and manipulates, it is transformed through his deft touch. His elegant mash-up of minimalism, action painting and pop art shows a striking grasp of color and form, and his delight in materiality is conveyed equally through his use of natural substances, manufactured objects, the old and the new.

Clark’s sculptures and wall pieces are like small islands, gatherings of ceramic figurines and other thrift-store objects huddled together. The poured resin joining them serves as both base and picture plane, confounding our expectations of front and back, or top and bottom. Through his work, Clark pokes at our assumptions, encouraging us to reconsider both art history and the everyday. His actions, and the objects that he offers, are a liberating force that are sure to delight as he invites us to consider how the world can be remade.

Artist George Kuchar's remarkable oeuvre of over 200 films and videos holds a unique place in 20th century cinema. Theorist Gene Youngblood named him one of the great artists in the history of the moving image, and he is admired by many notable filmmakers including Todd Solondz, Gus Van Sant, David Lynch, and Brian De Palma. John Waters considers Kuchar and his brother Mike to be his biggest influence, "more than Kenneth Anger or The Wizard of Oz".

Kuchar's "Hold Me While I'm Naked", ranked one of 100 Best Films of the 20th Century by the Village Voice, continues to delight with its mixture of good-natured vulgarity and tawdry humor. His equally impressive graphic work reflects his involvement in the underground comic scene of the 1970's, where he rubbed shoulders with Art Spiegelman, Bill Griffith and Robert Crumb, publishing in the infamousunderground comic "Arcade".

George Kuchar's films and videos have been recognized through countless awards and grants, including The National Endowment for the Arts, The Eureka Fellowship Program, and a Ford Foundation Fellowship from United States Artists. He is the recipient of the prestigious Maya Deren Award for Independent Film and Video Artists from the American Film Institute, and the Los Angeles Film Critics Award for Independent/Experimental Film and Video. His most recent, major work, "Secrets of the Shadow World" received full funding from the Rockefeller Foundation. Kuchar's work has screened around the globe in cinemas, festivals, and major museums, including The Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Pompidou Center in Paris.

The inspiration for the portraits is taken from magazine images. Reinventing the figure from a position of ambivalence and imagination, Truong adapts the sharp contrasts and vivid colouring of the printed source. By planting her characters onto the page stripped of their mise en scène details, exaggerated hair replaces the narrative authority of pose, dress and environment.

At once anthropomorphic, expressive, and self-ornamenting, hair becomes a significant extension of character. Manes are overgrown in unexpected places, causing its wiry, coarse unkemptness, to elicit a sense of the grotesque. On the other hand when the hair waves, curls and cascades, not unlike a powdered wig, it evokes expressions of elegance and majesty. Truong exploits the non-verbal communicative power of hair, socio-historically loaded as it is with notions of identity, gender and social status. Her monumental exaggeration of both the portrait and hair produces images that are mostly human while evoking animalistic associations.

This work has developed itself in stages, each new portrait informs its predecessor, contributing to the discourse of the whole. Whether contour or cross hatch, the incremental layering of line produces evidence of time and labour. The marks are visibly meticulous and repetitive gestures. In this sense, hair is not just an extension of the body within Truong's work; its physical relationship with drawing is also important. To depict hair in her drawings is to treat every strand as an act of insertion. The repetitions of lines define the dimensionality of the drawing.

Hung in conversation with another, Truong's monumental drawings are characterized by their imposing presence. Yet, however decorated their visage or nuanced in their expression, they are ambiguous characters. They act within a private round table discussion, a tête-à-tête-à-tête-à-tête of monumental heads in conversation with one another, collaborating on their own ideas of the beautiful and the beastly.

A Vision of Clarity, pencil crayon on paper, 14 x 11 inches

Winnie Truong lives and works in Toronto, and is a recent graduate of the Ontario College of Art & Design's drawing and painting program. Producing large-scale, labour-intensive drawings and using only pencil crayon and chalk pastel on paper, her portraits exploit the drawn line to manipulate hair, flesh and blemish, exploring notions of beauty and discomfort. Michael Caines' current work situates American political figures, both past and present, in altered 18th century paintings and Christian religious kitsch, referencing scenes from Alice in Wonderland, Bambi, and the Wizard of Oz. Drawing on the lineage of political cartooning in these pictures, Caines treats Richard Nixon, JFK, and Carl Rove, among others, with surprising tenderness and humor.

Influenced by Rick Perlstein's 2008 book, Nixonland: The Rise Of A President And The Fracturing Of America, Caines considers the fate of now obsolete political figures, and those who will someday, in turn, fall into the shadow of history. Their images, so vivid, are given an afterlife in electronic media, and they are, in a sense, both entombed there and in limbo. Caines' new work reveals the peculiar beauty that history lends to these iconic physiognomies, and his work is as much a response to their physicality as it is to the politics they are, or were, embroiled in. Thus baby-headed Carl Rove is cuddled by Ronald Reagan as dowager duchess, while a younger, glowingly handsome Jesus-Reagan cradles a little Glenn Beck lamb.

Caines rifles through the past, masterfully reworking elements of historical pictures to provide landscapes for these figures to inhabit. By conflating painting and political history, his work evokes nostalgia for the idealism that comes with belief, whether in political or artistic greatness. Caines references Sir John Tenniel's beautiful illustrations for Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland, utilizing the spirit of absurdity in the drawings and text as a form of critique. Rather than passively absorbing history and media images, Caines asserts his right to creative action. He thereby extends to us, his viewers, a kind of tentative idealism, one in which he in turn asserts our right to act on – rather than be acted upon – the images of our shared histories.

We are pleased to present Morgan Herrin 2010, the first solo exhibition of work by Morgan Herrin in New York.

Meticulously hand-carved wood sculpture is a rare commodity these days, but Dallas born and Richmond based artist Morgan Herrin successfully creates stunning work using undeniable skills and a distinctive, surprising style creating these masterpieces from construction grade 2x4's. Herrin's sculptures demand the better part of a year to create, and his newest piece is no exception. With this considerable investment and devotion given to each piece he is able to reach a level of detail and sophistication not typically found in wood sculpture.

This will be our sixth exhibition in our new ground level space in Chelsea. Mulherin Pollard Projects is a collaboration between John Pollard (ADA Gallery - Richmond,Virginia)and Katharine Mulherin (Katharine Mulherin Contemporary Art Projects - Toronto).

Untitled (knight) is the product of the combination of two subjects: 15th century plate armor and geological cave structure. Studied separately, these two subjects are completely unrelated. The man made geometric precision of plate armor is formally opposite of the flowing, organic stalactites and stalagmites. Seen together, these two parts present a striking contrast in form and create a theme of time and the effects of nature. The pose of the figure and the general composition are references to the classical sculpture The Dying Gaul of Roman antiquity. Rendered entirely in laminated construction-grade 2x4's, the material itself irreverently contradicts this classical allusion, and at the same time draws attention to our own culture's reliance on the fast, cheap, and impermanent. ~ Morgan Herrin

An Artist's Statement by Mike Bayne, on the exhibition Oil Paintings by Robert Ayre:

I started out thinking I would write an artist's statement about the difference between mechanical and abstract thought. Then I thought I would write something, a comment, on Werner Herzog's idea that his movies are a metaphor for something but he doesn't know what. Then I moved on to something about identity, cultural or artistic or national, and I thought I would tie that in with an age of economic uncertainty and possible collapse. That seemed too broad for two hundred and fifty words though – the acceptable length according to artist statement conventions (I looked it up on Wikipedia – it's supposed to be a manifesto of sorts too) – so I decided to focus on identity transformations. I was going to write about forming the belief, as a group, that we aren't what we thought we were and tie that in with the title of the show (the name of another artist that I know very little about). Then I thought about something to do with work and how artists are one of the last professions to be paid according to their productivity in contrast to most other jobs, from lawyers to plumbers, who are paid a wage. I thought this would be a good jumping off point to talk about work more generally and high-end manufacturing. Another idea was to write about the history of banality in painting from Canaletto to Courbet and Manet and onto Morandi. I also wanted to talk about Jeff Wall versus Berndt and Hilla Becher and my preference for documentary or journalistic photography.

All of that is to say that I didn't have a specific focus or clear stream of thought while painting these works. But it's probably appropriate insomuch that it's representative of my support for uncertainty, doubt and the acceptance of ignorance. And hopefully provides some insight into what I was thinking, at times, while painting … and is more interesting than saying, 'I don't know'.

Mulherin Pollard Projects is pleased to present GEORGE KUCHAR: ALWAYS & FOREVER.

Legendary American artist George Kuchar exhibits film, video, stills, drawings, paintings, comics from the 60's to today in our new Chelsea gallery's fourth exhibition since opening in June.

George Kuchar has directed over 200 films and videos since the 1950's. His films have screened all over the world, including a recent inclusion in this summers Berlin Biennale, a three day "Kuchar Celebration" event at Harvard Film Archives, a drive-in event in Portugal, and a four-program tribute at the San Francisco International Film Festival. George has won countless awards throughout his career, including grants from The National Endowment for the Arts and The Eureka Fellowship Program, A Ford Foundation Fellowship from United States Artists, The Worldwide Video Festival First Prize Award, The prestigious Maya Deren Award for Independent Film and Video Artists from the American Film Institute, The Frameline Award, The Cinevegas Vangaurd Award, The Los Angeles Film Critics Award for Independent/Experimental Film and Video, and Kuchar's recent major work, Secrets of the Shadow World, was fully funded by the Rockefeller Foundation. George's films have screened in many major museums in the US & abroad, including The Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Pompidou Center in Paris.

George and his twin brother Mike began making films when they were twelve. In the early 60's, the twenty-one year old Kuchars began regularly showing their films at the apartment of Ken Jacobs alongside their underground film contemporaries, Jack Smith, Stan Brakhage, Andy Warhol, as well as others in the downtown scene like Rauschenberg and Oldenburg. Village Voice film critic, Jonas Mekas also attended these events and made sure the Kuchars were written into the story of the New American Underground. At one of these parties, after viewing George's freshly developed 16mm film "Hold Me While I'm Naked" , Warhol told George he was getting "too good". The Village Voice ranked “Hold Me While I’m Naked” one of 100 Best Films of the 20th Century ( actually it ranked 52nd). "Before Warhol’s Superstars, the Kuchars already had anointed as movie-star icons their gawky Bronx neighbors and relatives, who populated their 8mm and 16mm melodramas," Gerald Peary. John Waters proclaims the early Kuchar films to to be his "biggest influence.... more than Kenneth Anger, The Wizard of Oz."

Other fans include Todd Solondsz, Gus Van Sant, Wayne Wang, David Lynch, Atom Egoyan, Guy Maddin and Brian De Palma. In an essay that accompanies The "World of George Kuchar" (Video Data Bank) , Gene Youngblood references his 1968 article on the (then) filmmaker, writing that, ‘“in these apparently lighthearted works I have always detected something more serious, something similar to the corrosive personal vision of Luis Buñuel, though I would not for an instant compare Kuchar to the Spanish master. Today,” Youngblood continues, “I would. There is no doubt in my mind that George Kuchar is one of the great artists in the history of the moving image.”

Filming on rooftops in the Bronx by night, The Kuchars attended The Manhattan School of Art and Design by day, where they honed their commercial art skills. Before leaving New York to teach at The San Francisco Art Institute one of George's first jobs was drawing illustrations for the local NBC weather segments. When George moved to San Francisco in the early 70's, he became involved with underground comic scene through his friends, Art Spiegelman, Bill Griffith and Robert Crumb. They regularly submitted their artwork to the underground comic, Arcade. Bill Griffith says that George is partly the inspiration behind his famous comic character, Zippy.

The opening reception will feature musical performances by the Halifax-based duo, Tasseomancy (formerly the Ghost Bees), and Toronto-based Castlemusic (Jennifer Castle).

For the third summer group exhibition at Mulherin Pollard projects, Katharine Mulherin curates important young Canadian women artists. Interestingly connected, the artists in this exhibition invite us on an impressive voyage. Relating to their own lives, and the long and winding roads of others, each artist contributes work that is at once magical and transparent. Through transformative means, forceful and emotive content merges with contemporary issues in image and object production.

The title, "she feels it all", comes from a photographic text work made by Sojourner Truth Parsons, which is presented in the show. We stumble upon a path where a patch of flowers provides the message.

The voyage begins.

The work presented here is very much an extension of the artists themselves, full of sensuous labour, disturbance, and history. Their work is connected to their lives and the lives of those around them. Building community through their varied practices: whether they are painting their friends, photographing strangers, creating social experiments, documenting an imaginary or forgotten past, travelling, exploring, connecting, performing, collaborating, organizing, or facilitating, these artists are prime examples of what gets made when artmaking becomes everyday practice.

Elise Rasmussen's process utilizes historical narratives as inspiration to create new works of contemporary relevance. In the fall of 2009, she embarked on a self-directed residency in a tiny village in Newfoundland. Her photographic diptych, Ladies Lookout ,responds to the romanticism and strife of women whose fates rest on the elements. These images take its name from and were photographed at the point on Signal Hill where women would wait in hopes of seeing their men return from the sea. The diptych serves as a response to folklore and reflection of the intensely elemental environment of the island of Newfoundland and is part of the series When the Sun Crosses the Line That Wind Will Rule the Weather.

Elise Rasmussen (b. 1977, Edmonton, Canada) first honored her franco-philia at the age of ten by proclaiming she would go by her middle name Elise. She continues to indulge her penchant for French culture by spending time in cafes, using Garamond typeface whenever possible, and creating projects inspired by New Wave cinema and the French Revolution. In addition to these pursuits, her works explore many themes including the relationship between salt and love, and how art makes people sick.Elise received her BFA from Ryerson University in 2004 and her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2007 where she was awarded a full tuition scholarship for merit. She has exhibited in the United States, Canada, Austria and Germany. Elise lives in Brooklyn, NY and recently completed a project investigating reasons why the Atlantic Ocean is ruining her love life, and the legacy of the Cod Fishery and Beothuk cultures on contemporary identity in Newfoundland.

Julia Kennedy's work is the residue of an ongoing exploration into the meaning of life, how she has come to make sense of things, a reflection of her personal desire to find balance and direction with the universe. This quest has lead to the development of a personalized symbology, a sort of coded visual language: a distillation of experience, a thousand pounds of rose petals=a phial of essence.

Through the rearrangement of universal symbols and objects, the creation of brand new symbols, specific instances in time, and combinations of these, Kennedy keeps the work open enough to encourage investigation. Believing in the power of new and alternate modes of communication, she promotes a looseness and a wider vision.

Julia Kennedy (b. March 28, 1984) earned her BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design, and also studied at Cooper Union in New York. She currently lives and works in Toronto.

Shauna Born's most recent paintings have been small, static portraits of strangers and intimates. Her work plays on the historical desire to document faces in portraiture. The size and nature of her paintings reflect the methods we use to consume image culture through ephemera such as digital photos, websites and magazines.

Since graduating from the Ontario College of Art and Design in 2004, Shauna Born has lived and worked in Toronto and exhibited in Canada, the United States and Europe. She has received Emerging Artists grants from the Ontario Arts Council in 2007 and 2009. In 2009 she received a Special Mention as a finalist in Canada's national portrait competition the Kingston Prize. Born has paintings in the collection of the Nerman Museum of Contemporary Art , Kansas, USA, The Beth DeWoody Collection, New York, USA, The Collection of George Hartman and Arlene Goldberg, Toronto, Canada, and the Canada Council Art Bank, Ottawa, which is Canada's permanent collection of contemporary art. She is also in numerous private collections across Canada and the United States. In September 2010 she will begin her MFA degree at the University of Waterloo.

Sojourner-Truth Parsons' work considers the intersection of magic, acculturation, feelings and sexuality. With references to both folk art tradition and witchcraft, her work straddles the tenuous line between make-believe and healing in confronting histories that feel borrowed, but are, in fact, inherited. The works in this exhibition address a simultaneous identification with and desire for the other, with a familiar, but out-of-reach sense of ritual, spiritualism and community. Working with readily available materials such as cardboard, white glue and scrap leather, Parsons's sculptures, performances and photographs cast deliberately fraught narratives marked by specters of belief and magical intensity.

Sojourner-Truth Parsons is an artist living and working in Toronto, Canada. Her work has been exhibited at Khyber Centre for the Arts (Halifax), Katharine Mulherin Contemporary Art Projects (Toronto), and will be seen at A1C Gallery (St. John's, Newfoundland) this fall. She recently toured with neo-folk band Tasseomancy, creating site-specific installations for their performances at venues across Europe. She holds a BFA from NSCAD University.

Elaine Stocki makes photographs and paintings of people in Winnipeg and New Haven, sometimes meeting them through classified ads that she has placed online or in the newspaper. She particularly likes groups of people. Her interests lie in the investigation of performance, spectacle and farce as tools for questioning and blurring the lines of gender, race and class. Stocki is seeking some sort of genuine expression of emotion in what are, for the most part, contrived situations.

Elaine Stocki (b.1979) was born and raised in Winnipeg Canada. She received her MFA in photography from Yale University in 2009. Recently Stocki's photographs were included in Collier Schorr's experimental exhibition Freeway Balconies at the Deutsche Guggenheim in Berlin. She lives and works in New York City.

Heather Goodchild is a Toronto-based artist working primarily in textiles. Since 2002 she has used folk techniques such as rug-hooking, quilting, and inlaid patchwork to make objects and installations from an imagined history. By developing new ways to practice traditional crafts, she creates pieces that seem to exist both in the past and present. The stories and symbols in her work explore the human need for ritual, regalia, and a moral code.

Davida Nemeroff is an artist and the proprietress of Night Gallery (LA). Originally from Toronto, Nemeroff received her MFA from Columbia University in '09. She lives and works in Los Angeles.

For She Feels it All, Nemeroff explores the multivariate forms and bodies of power and femininity through a seductively moist lens.

Tyler Clark Burke works in paint, on paper, in glass, in metal, with people, with music, and now ash diamonds—but one thread always runs true: her themes are decidedly deadly. Her two last shows, A Murder of Vs and Shimera, were both widely reviewed; her work has been shown and collected internationally. Her career began in commissioned art for musicians (including a continuing collaboration with Feist, as well as work for artists on her own label Three Gut Records). She is a master of hi-jinx and heart strings, smoke and mirrors. Her work is a continuing play for passion, wrought in material. A fake abduction, a marching procession of faint zebras, and a spontaneous choreography of dirge dancers have all been part of her spectacle, your spectacle. Outside of art journals and magazines, her events and projects have been featured in or on MTV, Spin Magazine, ABC, The Globe and Mail, Toronto Star and The National Post.

Tasseomancy is a continuation of what was a bare bones neo-gothic folk duo. Formerly known as Ghost Bees, Sari and Romy Lightman have begun to experiment with heavier, ambient sounds, influenced by death ritual, hebraic song, war drums, ancestry and myth. The sisters recorded their second full-length this winter with producer Taylor Kirk and accompanying band, Timber Timbre. It will be released sometime before the next thaw.

Castlemusic is the avant-folk songwriting project of Jennifer Castle, Toronto. Elusive and poetic on record, her songs insist they speak for themselves. Intuitive and generous performances aim to share their secrets. Both her records and performances have been well received and are held in high esteem by press, peers and community.

Mulherin Pollard is pleased to present Dream Come True, an exhibition of works by seven contemporary artists from the US and Canada.

For the gallery owners, this new NY space is a dream come true. We've chosen works for this exhibition that combine the celebratory notion of the dream come rue, and the more surreal dreamlike quality of many of these works. Pulling from their independent programs, Katharine Mulherin and John Pollard have co-curated the exhibition, providing a platform for new connections and dialogue for their artists.

Michael Caines is a New York based artist working in drawing and painting. His work has been exhibited in commercial, public and artist run galleries in Canada, and commercial galleries in the US, as well as numerous international art fairs with Katharine Mulherin Contemporary Art Projects, where he is represented in Canada. Caines has participated in a number of artist residencies, including the Santa Fe Art Institute, the Millay Colony, Bemis Center and Jentel. Among other awards, he has received Avery and Chalmers Fellowships, and a grant from the Joan Mitchell foundation. A fifteen-year survey of his painting and drawing, titled "Passing Glory" will open at the Art Gallery of Peterborough and tour Canada in 2010. Caines recently completed his MFA at Parsons the New School.

Ann Magnuson is an American actress, performance artist, and nightclub performer.

After graduating from Denison University in 1978, she moved to New York City pursuing a performance career on varied fronts. In the late '70s and early '80s, Magnuson ran Club 57, in New York City's East Village. The club was located in the basement of the Polish National church. It became a center of a world that included Keith Haring, Kenny Scharf, and many others from New York's budding graffiti and downtown scenes.[6] Club 57 was known for its theme nights such as Reggae Miniature Golf, or Model World of Glue Night.

Magnuson developed an underground following as lead vocalist of the band Bongwater, formed in 1985. Her 15-minute video performance piece "Made for Television", self-produced in 1981, ran on the WNET-PBS avant garde series Alive from Off-Center. Her satiric featurette found her playing close to 50 roles in a "channel-hopping" series of visual bites parodying television programming game shows to TV-movies to televangelists.

Although Dean Baldwin has been somewhat nomadic since he was awarded the Canada Council International Residency in London, UK, in 2009, he still self-identifies as a Toronto-based artist. His recent projects include The Dork Porch, curated by Michelle Jacques for the AGO, Toronto (2010) Fattening Frogs for Snakes, curated by Andrew Davies for No. 9: Contemporary Art & the Environment, presented at the Royal Bank Plaza, Toronto (2009); Sweet Dreams, curated by Barbara Fischer for Scotiabank Nuit Blanche at the Justina M. Barnicke Gallery, Hart House, Toronto (2008); and Never Been to Tehran, curated by Andrea Grover and Jon Rubin for venues in Iran, Turkey, Denmark, New Zealand, Germany and the United States (2007)

Lisa Neighbour was born in Montreal, Quebec, and now lives and works in Toronto, Ontario. She graduated from the Ontario College of Art and Design, and received an MFA from York University in 2009. She exhibits with Persona Volare, (a collective of Toronto-based installation and media artists) and is represented by Katharine Mulherin Contemporary Art in Toronto. Lisa Neighbour is presently a member of the faculty of the Art and Art History Program, a joint program between Sheridan College and U of T.

Her work incorporates lights and electrical hardware as media and as metaphor. Neighbour has also used print media, drawing, video and sculpture to conduct a search for the miraculous qualities in commonplace materials.

Michael Harrington graduated from Toronto's Ontario College of Art and Design in 1989. Until 1997 he painted at night while in the daytime he worked at his father's human resources company in Ottawa. The day job honed his observation skills and provided insights into the working world, and his night drives supplied the moody settings for his paintings. More recently, family vacations to sun-filled American towns have added some bright notes to his palette. While all the world is a stage for Harrington, he leaves out much of the information needed to piece together a coherent story. The inscrutable activities of his figures thwart viewers' prejudices and interpretations. Since 1998 Harrington has been painting full time, still mostly at night. He has exhibited regularly in solo shows at Katharine Mulherin Comtemporary Art Projects, Toronto, at Galerie St-Laurent+Hill, Ottawa, Galerie de Bellefeuille, Montreal, and Miller Block Gallery in Boston, Mass. He has participated in group exhibitions in public venues such as the Carleton University Art Gallery (2000), the Ottawa Art Gallery (2003-2004) and (2009) , Galerie Saw Gallery (2007), and the Glenbow Museum Calgary 2007. His paintings are featured in the collections of the Agnes Etherington Art Centre in Kingston, the Glenbow Museum in Calgary, the Canada Council Art Bank as well as numerous corporate and private collections.

Bruce Wilhelm was born in Richmond Virginia in 1981. He received a BFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2004. During his time at VCU he won the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Fellowship (2004) and began working with ADA Gallery of Richmond. After school Wilhelm's work was exhibited throughout the US and Europe. Recent awards include VMFA Fellowship (VA) 2006, Trawick Prize (Mid Atlantic) 2007, and the JC Reynal Scholarship Finalist which is currently being decided (Bordeaux, France) 2008. Recent exhibits of his work are Scope Basel Switzerland 2008 with ADA Gallery, Pass Me the Muster which included artists from The Royal Art Lodge in Meyers Gallery at The University of Cincinnati DAAP 2008, Side Effects May Vary at ADA Gallery 2008, and Action.Stop.Action at Vox Populi in Philadelphia 2008. Wilhelm currently lives and works in Philadelphia.

Kristin Beal-DeGrandmont's practice unites her painting and drawing with technology, seeking to isolate points of beauty, commonality and memory. Growing uo in the Midwest, she rode along an expansive landscape, her hopes and dreams projected onto the vast horizon. In her work, she hopes to capture different types of pictorial space with movement allowing the viewer to become further spatially engaged with it. Shadow evokes feelings of a dream, conveying several moments, orchestrated and controlled.

The artist received her MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in 2002 and has exhibited extensively throughout the United States independently and as a member of the collective Hack.Art.Lab, a collaborative team of artists, educators, technologists and engineers, who, through creative engagement with science and technology, explore learning models and create projects that offer new persepectives in art, technology and society.

Featuring mostly works on paper, Friends and Family presents artists from both Mulherin and Pollard's independent programs.

Seth Scriver's ongoing portrait series are of locals from his neighborhood, Kensington Market and Chinatown in Toronto. The portraits start out as small sketches that are blown up, traced then airbrushed onto paper through an insanely labor intensive process of stenciling. Most of his practice is based on personal experience and stories told to him. His visual aesthetics push toward a type of fantasy world created through a stream of consciousness drawing style. The work presents a believable view of a chaotic world in which known and unknown entities play out small dramas.
Born in 1977 and raised in downtown Toronto, Seth received a BFA from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 2002. He has shown widely nationally and internationally. With collaborator Shayne Ehman, Scriver has been working on a double feature animation "Asphalt Watches": an epic cross-Canada true hitchhiking story, which has taken him to multiple residencies from Japan to Sackville New Brunswick.
Currently Seth resides at his headquarters, The Diddly Squat in Toronto Ontario.
His first publication, Stooge Pile was published in 2010 by Drawn & Quarterly, and is available through the gallery.

Born in 1988, Winnie Truong lives and works in Toronto and is a recent graduate of the Ontario College of Art and Design's drawing and painting program. Producing large-scale labor intensive drawings and using only pencil crayon and chalk pastel on paper, her monumental portraits exploit the drawn line to manipulate hair, flesh and blemish… and explore notions of beauty and discomfort.
Winnie is the recipient of numerous awards, including this year's W.O.Forsythe award and the 401 Richmond Career Launcher prize.

Daniel Davidson, born in 1965, began his career while still attending San Francisco Art Institute as one half of the collaborative team Beattie and Davidson, who won the Prix de Rome in 1994. After several successful exhibitions and extensive inclusion in museum shows worldwide, Davidson, who was a seminal figure in the pre-mission school group at SFAI, branched out on his own. His work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions at ADA Gallery in Richmond, Elizabeth Dee Gallery in NY, Galerie Schuster in Frankfurt, Pierogi in Brooklyn and the Museum of Contemporary Art in San Diego, to name a few. Davidson currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York.

Daniel Davidson's work is a fusion of hybrid characters, spaces and styles, his goal being the creation of a meaningful reflection on the emotional states inherent in everyday experience. Often employing the comic or the grotesque, Davidson's works are multiple and fractured personalities looking for a cobbled identity. Walter Robinson at Artnet said that Daniel's "ADA gallery Picture Booth" was "one of the most entertaining parts of the Miami art fest" in 2006. Daniel is at it again with his "Paper Towel Machine" which continuously feeds out 200 feet of stream-of-consciousness drawings on a roll of paper towels. Each
wave of the hand presents a new 20 dollar drawing.

Jeremiah Johnson (b.1974) was raised on a fruit and flower farm in the mountains of north central Pennsylvania. As a child Jeremiah spent his days playing in the woods and his nights drawing. Once he graduated from high school he left the farm to become an artist in the big city of Philadelphia. Johnson received his BFA from Tyler School of Art of Temple University and eventually went on to get his MFA in print, paper and book arts from Syracuse University. A few more years of living in Philadelphia took its toll on Jeremiah's health so he soon found himself back home in Williamsport. He currently teaches arts and craft courses for the Pennsylvania College of Technology and works at home in his basement making art about culture, folklore, and survival.

Katharine Mulherin and John Pollard met at an art fair in New York in 2006 and have been friends ever since. They recognized that they share a similar background as artists who became gallerists to create community in their respective cities. The two dealers have been talking for a while about how to partner their programs. Both Katharine Mulherin Contemporary Art Projects (TORONTO, LOS ANGELES ) and Pollard's ADA Gallery (RICHMOND, VIRGINIA) feature artists with both emerging and extensive careers, whose works engaging, intelligent, collected and honored.
